Spines

Swansea, AZ

Here's a saguaro cactus up-close and personal. The spines are adapted not only for defense, but to shade the cactus from the fierce desert sun and to reduce effects of the desiccating desert winds. While this appeared to be one of the healthier saguaros in the area, a closer look reveals many blemishes - perhaps the action of cactus beetles?
