Ruined Store #1 Candelaria, NV This ruin was once a store or the post office at Candelaria. At its peak, Candelaria could boast of having a number of stores, two hotels, several offices for lawyers, three doctors, and many saloons, but no church. Water was always in short supply and was a commodity here. When the town was first founded, water had to be shipped in; the closest spring being 9 miles away. At that time water was considerably more expensive than whiskey, going for about $1 per gallon. (This did not bode well for the frequency of, or the regard for, bathing!) Once the Carson & Colorado railroad spur was in operation in 1882, a better water supply was ensured. Unfortunately, there was never enough water for use in the mining operations. The stamp mill operated dry and the dust-filled air claimed the lives of many workers from 'miners consumption' - dieing as their lungs filled with rock dust.
