Dugout Shack

Candelaria, NV

This is one of the few remaining miner shacks at the town site. Wood for construction was in short supply in the area, so earth and stone was used where possible. The town site is at a very exposed location and would have been bitterly cold and windy in the winter, as well as unbearably hot, dry, and dusty (as well as windy) in the summer. The thick earthen walls, roof, and floor must have provided some measure of insulation and relief from these extremes.
