Abandoned Mining Equipment #1 Ophir Canyon, NV This is large piece of abandoned mining equipment, apparently a crushing and sorting unit, located at an unnamed mine at the entrance to Ophir Canyon. These modern mining ruins were not what I had come to photograph, but they were all I could safely gain access to. I had intended to shoot in the 1800's era stone ruins located further up the canyon, but I came about one month too late in the year to access those ruins. The road up the canyon is very steep and narrow and winds back and forth across a flowing creek, with at least 10 shallow crossings. Normally for 4WD this would not be a problem, however, a storm the night before had left snow on the ground at higher elevation, while hillside springs created broad expanses of solid ice across the road. Given the night's weather forecast for more snow and the current road conditions, I stayed to the lower elevation ruins I had noticed on the way in.
