Mercantile Bank #1

Ludlow, CA

These are the ruins of the old Mercantile Bank at Ludlow, California, on Route 66. This building, constructed in 1908, was largely intact until the Landers Earthquake of 1992, at which time the front of the building collapsed. Now there are large slabs of heavy masonry dangling from the upper story and swaying in the desert wind; held only by the thinnest of metal rebar. This is one area to NOT walk under! Notice that part of the original Mercantile inscription from the building facade is visible near the center of the image.

As this was my first night photo outing, I used what equipment I had on hand. Here, I attempted to fill in the shadows using colored gel over an underpowered flash unit. The effect does not show in this image and I have since upgraded to a more suitable flash.
