Mine Head Frame and Hoisting Works

Goldfield, NV

This is one of the many abandoned mines dotting the area around Goldfield, Nevada. Gold was first discovered in the area in 1902, some limited mining was underway by 1903, and a major gold rush started in 1904. By 1905, the short-line railroad, the Goldfield R.R. had been built to connect the growing mining district with Tonopah to the north. The mines produced between 80 to 125 million dollars in gold ore before playing out between 1912 and 1918. The town has been in decline every since. Several other major setbacks contributing to the decline include a major flood which destroyed a large part of the town in 1913 and a devastating fire which burned out 53 blocks in 1923.
