John S. Cook & Co. Bank Ruins #1 Rhyolite, NV The moon is seen rising behind the shell of the John S. Cook & Co. Bank building in Rhyolite, Nevada. This building was three stories tall and cost about $90,000 to build, at the time. Rhyolite Ghost Town is located near Beatty, Nevada. The town was founded in 1904 and had electricity by 1907. During the town's heyday, there were over 10,000 residents - for then, the largest city in Nevada. The financial panic of 1907 damaged the town and business began to close. Not long after, the mines began to play out. By 1916, the power and light company folded and people moved away - the town died. Now, one can only wonder what the bustling mining town must have once been like. Only ruins remain. This is one of the first shots I took on this night - the outlook for the night was not good due to the weather. Banks of clouds were moving in, smothering the moon in folds of dark grey cotton. The wind had turned chill and gusty - at times, strong enough to shake the camera tripod. The ruins were eerily quiet, except for the sigh and moan of the wind blowing through the tumbled piles of ruined stonework, the dry rustle of sage and tumbleweed, or for the high-pitched chirp of hunting bats gyring crazily overhead. Somewhere in the distance could be heard the creak and bang of rusty sheet metal. Copyright © 2002-2004 Jerry Day If you arrived here by search engine, click here to see the rest of site. |
