Wildrose Charcoal Kilns #3

Death Valley National Park, CA

This exposure of the front of the kilns was taken as the moon was just rising over the rim of Wildrose Canyon. Entering the kilns in order to illuminate the interior was an creepy experience. The kilns are pitch black inside, lined with soot. The floor of compacted charcoal and ash sounds hollow to the footstep. The center of the dome is an efficient echo chamber, where the least sound reflects back from the beehive dome. Around the base of the dome, about one foot off the ground, is a double row of vents piercing the wall - from the right angle, moonlight shining behind these vents give the disconcerting appearance of (very large!) eyes peering out from inside the kiln.  A deliciously eerie effect...
