Monitor-Belmont Mill Exhaust Stack #1 Belmont, NV This smokestack marks the site of the 20-stamp Monitor-Belmont Mill. The mill was constructed in 1867 by the Belmont Silver Mining Company to process ore from the Monitor-Belmont and other mines. From this vantage point, one can see at least twenty five miles down the valley - Tonopah lies on the other side of the most distant hills - nothing between but wide open spaces - grasslands and sage, with the occasional scattering of Utah Juniper and Pinyon Pine. In the foreground is a marshy area - the spring-fed remnant of the mill pond. (Just enough water flows here this time of the year to fill a boot after a careless step - yuck!)
