Nobody Home

Osceola, NV

This is miners shack is one of the few remaining original wooden structures at the Osceola, Nevada town site. Most such structures have either collapsed over time, have been destroyed by vandalism, or have been cleared to make way for more recent cabins, homesteads, or mining activity.

Osceola was founded in 1872 with the discovery of gold. A second mine nearby was opened in 1877. Town population soon reached around 1,000. Since water was easily available at this location, destructive hydraulic mining was used. Eventually the placer deposits were stripped away and the town died. A few residents yet remain, still working small mining operations, while others appear to maintain summer cabins here. Little remains of the original town site, but there are many modern mining relics to be found.
