Relics Hamilton, NV The relics of a modern mining revival, now long past in turn, mix with the wrack from a previous century. These ruins are in the heart of the Hamilton Nevada town site - a true ghost town. The town was founded in 1869 and followed the pattern of so many boom and bust silver mining towns. At its peak, about 25,000 people lived here, before 1887 when the easily accessible shallow silver ore deposits played out and deeper, more extensive mining failed to uncover new veins of ore. Still, the town hung on, experiencing a few mining revivals, until 1931 when the post office finally closed. The site is located in eastern Nevada, near the town of Ely, at an elevation of around 8,000 feet. The scenery in the area is spectacular! Incredible vistas of rolling, sage-covered hills, deep valleys, and distant mountains. Above the town site looms hulking and barren Treasure Hill, heart of the White Pine mining district, and site of the Treasure City ghost town. This is the first of the images from Hamilton. On this night, right at dusk and throughout the night, large herds of deer, and perhaps Elk, moved through the town site, heading first to water in a nearby impoundment. All night long came the sound of large animals grazing on the sage-covered hills and throughout the site. Occasionally a spotlight would pick out the gleam of eyes in the silvered dark, or provoke a startled snort and brief crashing as a large form bounds through the sage - not to go far before resuming grazing, ever wary of this intrusion on their turf.
