Tufa Study #4

Mono Lake Tufa State Reserve, CA

Falling lake levels have left many of the tufa formations, such as this one, high and dry - surrounded by sere grasses and a rising tide of sagebrush. Still, lake levels have fluctuated before as climate changed and ice ages came and went - ancient and crumbling tufas stranded high in the hills mark the level of the lake at the retreat of the last ice age, some 12,000 years ago.
