Reflections

Mono Lake Tufa State Reserve, CA

Looking not unlike the encrusted spines of some passing leviathan, the spires of a massive offshore tufa island reflect in the glassy waters.

As still and serene as the setting seems, the night is alive with sound. Eerie cries of some unrecognized migratory water bird carries across the water. Coyotes in the surrounding hills serenade the Moon, while the hooting of owls can be heard from around the shore - and from the larger offshore tufa islands. A constant faint patter of "plish"-ing and "plop"-ing from the waters mark the progress of a flotilla, presumably, of the Eared grebes, diving for a midnight buffet of brine shrimp. Indeed, the beam of my 2,000,000 cp spotlight occasionally sweeps across one or a few of the petite diving birds who react with a startled and frantic, but short, dash out of the light - "plish-plish-plish-plish".
