Trona Pinnacles #1

California BLM Area

This unearthly landscape is of the Trona Pinnacles, located near Trona, California, in the California Desert Conservation Area. The Pinnacles, some standing as high as 140 feet, rise from the Searles Dry Lake basin. This lake bed was not always dry, however. During the last glaciation, these carbonate Tuffa spires stood under about 600 feet of water; you can still see the 'bathtub ring' of the ancient lake shore in the surrounding hills. The Tuffa spires formed along fault lines in the lake floor where mineral springs seeped up through the fractured strata.
