Garlock Ruins

Garlock, CA

This ruined shack and water tower is one of the few structures left standing in the Garlock ghost town. Eugene Garlock constructed the first mill, the Garlock Pioneer Mill, to process the ore from the nearby Randsburg mines. Additional mills were added later and a small town thrived, despite scarcity of water in the area. The town was abandoned by 1903.

This location seems to currently be used for the site of a decorative rock storage and work area and a swap meet location. The air is filled with the medicinal scent of a large eucalyptus tree which also happens to be the abode or perch of a large barn owl. This owl circled about overhead most of the time I was photographing the area, making occasional low passes and issuing the occasional blood-curdling disembodied shriek - quite the companion for a night photo shoot.
