Atolia Mine Headframe #1

Atolia, CA

This is one of the headframes of the mine at Atolia, California - the framing for the open mine shaft can be seen low to the left in the image.

The Atolia mine, located near Red Mountain, began operation in 1905 mining Tungsten ore through the World War I era. Atolia was named after two of the mines officers, Atkins and Degolia. During Atolia's peak, around 2000 people lived here. The town sported a movie theatre, a dairy, and a saloon called the 'Bucket of Blood'. Now, all that remains are ruins; including  many building foundations, miners shacks, open pits and mine shafts, various headframes - metal or timber, and many standing buildings containing mining equipment.

Watch your step around here due to the large number of open shafts and pits which dot the landscape!
